Bringing Up Baby | 1938

Bringing Up Baby is a screwball comedy from 1938. Don't let the fact that it's old and in black and white deter you, this movie is a riot. A must watch.

Cary Grant plays Dr. David Huxley, whose life is going pretty great. He's just about to get married, and he just got word that the last bone he needs to complete the dinosaur skeleton he's been working on has been found.
Katharine Hepburn plays Susan Vance, whose life is going good I assume. She's rich so she's just chillin', enjoying life.

David and Susan first meet at a golf course where David is meeting with Mr. Peabody, who is the lawyer for a woman who is potentially going to donate a million dollars to the museum David works at.

Trying to golf with Mr. Peabody.

Trying to get his golf ball back from Susan.

Because of Susan, David's meeting with Mr. Peabody gets interrupted so they try to meet later that day for dinner, but of course as luck would have it, Susan also happens to be there.
David misses Mr. Peabody once more.
Suffice to say, both these first two times David and Susan meet, things did not go well, with David taking the brunt of it.
Poor guy.
But also his poor car (is get banged up), his poor hat (it gets flattened) and his poor jacket (it gets ripped).
Bro is not having fun.

But there is hope! Susan actually knows Mr. Peabody, so she decides to help David finally get his meeting.
If you guessed that Susan's help doesn't go well (despite her good intentions) then you would be 100% correct. But this time David is spared from the ill affects Susan seems to cause and Mr. Peabody takes the L, or a rock to the head to be more exact.
Ouch. It's not looking good for that possible 1 million being donated to the museum!

Now I don't really want to go telling you the entire plot but I've do still have to explain who baby is.

So at the end of the evening when David and Susan part ways, Susan has grown quite fond of David and is sad to see him go especially when David mentions that he is getting married the very next day.
David however, has different feelings about Susan.
After Susan learns of David's impending nuptials you can see on her face, this girl is planning something. Up till now enough things have been happening without her planning them, so you can only imagine what will happen when she does plan something.

It just so happens that the very next day, Susan gets a delivery from her brother (who is abroad).
What's in the delivery? A leopard. No joke. The leopards name is Baby.
With this opportunity so conveniently dropped into her lap, Susan uses it as an excuse to call David up and tell him about her new pet (actually she asks him if he wants it, he doesn't).
Of course David doesn't believe for a moment that she actually has a leopard (who could blame him), and while Susan is trying to convince him, she happens to trip and fall.
David hears the ruckus through the phone and is startled into belief (I guess) and he asks Susan if the leopard is attacking her. She starts to say no, then realizes she can use this to her advantage. She makes even more of a ruckus on her end of the phone and lets out a few cries of distress.
Her ploy works and David is off to her rescue (but not before also falling down while still on the phone, because why not).
Once David arrives at Susan's house and finds her to be perfectly fine, he is miffed and accuses her of lying about the leopard. Of course she can easily prove that she does indeed have a leopard.
Jumpscare.
This is where I'll leave you (hopefully in enough suspense to go watch the movie). And you should know that at this point it's only been like 25 minutes into the movie.

As the film goes on absolute mayhem and hilarity ensues. Or it continues I should say, cause up to this point there has already been a multitude of funny misadventures.
And just to give you some more incentive to go watch this, here a a few pictures of events as the movie goes on.
That's a masterpiece of understatement.

David wondering how he got into this situation (spoiler, it was Susan).

Trying to find Baby by singing his favorite song (yeah, the lost the leopard).

David is not amused.

David wondering if he will ever have another moment of peace in his life.

RIP David.

Do you want to watch it yet?
And if you're worried that I've given away too much about this movie, fear not! I only told you about the tip of the iceberg.

Now, on to my review!

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really liked this movie, I had so much fun watching it!
Both Cary and Katharine did perfectly in these roles, they had me rolling.
I love the pace of the plot, there is not a dull moment. Things are constantly coming at you but it never feels like too much.
There are also so many wisecracks, especially from Susan. She always has one ready and I love her for it.
I laughed so much while watching this, there were even a few times when something was so funny, I immediately skipped backwards to watch the part again (as well as laugh again).
They really don't make movies like this anymore.

I highly recommend this film. No, I more than merely recommend. I beg you, watch it!
Make sure to tell me what you think if you do (even if you hate it).

So there you have it, the masterpiece that is Brining Up Baby.
Have you already seen this one? Did you love it? Hate it?
If you haven't seen yet are you going to?
Leave me a comment and tell me all the things!

Thanks for reading :)
Bye now!
